Transcathetral arterial chemoembolization of the liver - technical problems and complicationsReview article
- Radiologická klinika Lékařské fakulty Masarykovy univerzity a FN, Brno
Transcathetral arterial chemoembolization of the liver (TACE) plays important role in management of selected liver tumours nowdays. The technique is similar to other embolization procedures, nevertheless besides general it is also associated with specific technical problems and complications.
Technical problems are represented by technical difficulties of catheterization (stenosis, anatomical variants, etc.), occurence of dissections or spasms, presence of extra hepatic collateral supply and occurence of arterioportal or arterivenous shunts.
Specific complications include nontarget embolization of arteries supplying surrounding organs (gallbladder, gastroduodenum), development of liver abscess or liver failure.
The knowledge of potential complications and technical problems of TACE can significantly improve the outcome of patients indicated to this procedure.
