Nowadays, the MRI is an easily accessible imaging modality, which allows us to use it for standard and standardized imaging of the optic nerve from its second through fourth section.
The position of the MRI in imaging of the optic nerve is unique.
It enables us to image not only the optic nerve effectively with its thickness and focal pathologies, but also the composition of its near structures - filling of subarachnoidal spaces, vagine of optic nerve and mutual ratio between the full thickness of the nerve and vagine, and the nerve itself.
Such data can play a significant role not only in the diagnosis in ophtalmology, but also in the diagnosis of illnesses of the central nerve system. Imaging of optic nerve follows the basic imaging of brain. It is possible to standardise the imaging of optic nerve, and thus simplify the following check-ups.
In the following discussion we are concentrating on the general overview of causes of atrophy and hypertrophy of optic nerve.
We are analysing the possibilities of influence of extraorbital patologies, which may manifest in vision failure.
