Aim: To summarize first experiences with whole body MRI include diffuse weighted images in patients with multiple myeloma, correlate the results of plain radiogram and MRI and consider the impact of diffuse weighted images (DWI).

Methods: 30 patients were examined since May to October 2007 by the whole body algorithm on Philips Achieva 1.5 T machine. There were 14 woman and 16 men, 25-72 years old. The impact of plain radiogram and MRI - especially T1, STIR and DWI sequences was correlated in 16 patients with the localized multiple myeloma lesions.

Results: MRI detected twice more lytic lesions in comparison with plain radiogram - 58 on either T1 or STIR images, only 29 on the radiogram. On the axial skeleton was the number of the lesions detected same on T1, STIR or DWI sequence - the value of these sequences is the same.

Conclusion: The usage of whole body MRI is in diagnostic algorithms of many disorders undoubtful and its value was approved in many studies. Addition of DWI images yields a new sight to many abnormalities and must be evaluated in large cohorts of patients. In our study, we prove the importance of this sequence in the imaging of bone marrow lesions in patients with multiple myeloma.
