Mucocele of the appendix is chronic cystic dilatation of the appendix characterised by mucin accumulation and luminal obstruction. Mucoceles are often asymptomatic. It is very important to distinguish non-neoplastic (retention) mucocele from neoplastic mucocele, mucinous cystadenoma, or cystadenocarcinoma. Due to the risk of rupture (pseudomyxoma peritonei) and potential malignant transformation, subjects with mucocele should undergo prophylactic surgical removal.
