Renal cell carcinoma is the most frequent kidney neoplasm; its incidence in the Czech Republic is the highest in the world and increases continuously. Development of laparoscopic kidney surgery makes perfect preoperative staging of the renal cell carcinoma necessary, together with imaging of the vascular supply of the kidney affected by tumor. Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) offers staging and imaging of the vascular supply in one examination. The optimal spatial resolution depends on sub-millimeter data acquisition. Bi-phasic kidney imaging in arterial and venous phases offers excellent results in detection and differential diagnosis of the renal cell carcinoma. The article reviews typical imaging features of histological subtypes of the renal cell carcinoma, criteria of TNM staging, clinically important vascular supply variants, and tumor related changes in renal vasculature.
