Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate the therapeutic role of vertebroplasty in patients with acute vertebral compression fractures.

Method: From January 2004 to April 2006, twenty vertebroplasties were performed at our institution in patients with acute thoracolumbal spinal trauma. All patients presented with stable compressive fractures type A1.1 and A1.2 according to Magerle classification. The average age of the fracture was 4.5 days (range 2-7 days from the date of trauma). The average age of patients was 67.5 years (57-82 years); in males 73 years (range 62-82 years), in females 65.3 years (range 57-72 years). The procedure was performed under fluoroscopic control in an interventional suite. Immediately after the procedure (4-24 hours) patients were mobilized; therefore, transient corsetotherapy was used during next 2-4 weeks. Pain using visual analog scale (VAS) score (1-10), complications, and hospitalization period were recorded. Patients were controlled 3 days, 3 months, and 6 months after vertebroplasty.

Results: Local asymptomatic complications were found in 20 % of cases. No symptomatic or systemic complication was encountered. In vertebroplasty treated group, the average VAS was 8.6 before procedure, 3.2 at three months, and 2.5 at six months after procedure. The average hospitalization period was 7.25 days.

Conclusion: The number of percutaneous procedures increases in the group of non-osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Analgesic and stabilization effect enables faster patient's mobilization, shortening of both hospitalization and time needed to utilize ortotic devices.
