Dissection of vertebral and/or basilar artery is a less common cause of cerebral ischaemia in the posterior circulation. Recent diagnostic imaging methods, especially MRI combined with MRA, enable non-invasive assessment of extent and duration of ischaemia as well as of arterial patency. The authors present three cases of acute ischaemia within the posterior fossa resulting from isolated basilar artery dissection of a various extent. All reported cases were primarily diagnosed by means of MRI and MR angiography.
