Aim: Carotid artery stenting is acceptable and less invasive alternative to carotid endarterectomy. Aim of the stenting is to avoid a stroke and neurologic problems. The paper shows our experience and results achieved in last 7 years.

Material and method. From 2002 until April 2008 we treated 444 patients with atherosclerotic carotid stenosis (317 men, 127 women, mean age 71 years). We implanted 474 stents to 469 carotid arteries. Stenosis was symptomatic in 303 patients (62.5% of all patients), asymptomatic stenosis in 182 patients (37.5% of all patients). Restenosis after surgical endarterectomy was treated in 48 patients. Procedures was performed with distal embolic protection devices.

Results: Technical success was 96.8%. Seven patients (1.57% of all patients) died within 30 days after stenting, 3 patients died for neurological complications (0.67%), 4 patients died for other reasons (0.9%). Permanent neurological deficit occured in 8 patients (1.8%). Morbidity and mortality rate from neurological reasons was 2.47 % (0.67% + 1.8%). Total morbidity and mortality rate of our set is 3.37%.

Conslusion. Results show that carotid artery stenting with protection became during 7 years in our department routine, effective and safe method of treatment.
