Aim: To assess the our own experience with palliative transarterial chemo-embolization of the liver (TACE) by means of drug eluting beads (DEB).

Material and method. 16 patients received TACE with application of DEB (12 men, 4 women, mean age 65,5) during 24 months between 2007 and 2008. There were 26 embolisation procedures, 1-4 procedure per patient. Patients were treated due hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (n = 7), cholangiocellular carcinoma (CHCC) (n = 1) and metastases of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) (n = 8). Doxorubicin was used in treatment of primary liver tumors in the maximum dose 100 mg per procedure, irinotecan was used in treatment of liver metastasis of CRC in the maximum dose 200 mg per procedure.

Results: The results of the transarterial embolisation were assessed by means of dual-phase CT. We identified: the complete necrosis of the tumorous tissue in one case (7.7%), the reduction of the viable tissue in more than 50% of original area in eight patients (61%), stable extent of the tumorous tissue in three patients (23%) and the progression of the tumorous lesion in only one patient (7.7%).

Conclusion: TACE with application of DEB is save palliative treatment of patients with primary or secondary liver tumors not amenable to surgical resection or local ablation. Our own results showed benefit of the method in selected subgroups of patients.
