Dual-energy CT: imaging of the musculoskeletal systemTechnical Innovation

A novel application of the X rays with two different energies during CT examination allowed new analysis of acquired data. One of the newest applications of the dual-energy CT is musculoskeletal imaging. The spectrum of clinically usable applications covered iodine distribution assessment in evaluation of the tissue perfusion; subtraction of the skeleton, analysis of the protein-rich tissues like ligaments, tendon and cartilage; and the analysis of the tissue uratic deposits in gout. In the preview article, there are listed and discussed the imaging and clinical potential of each kind of dual-energy CT analysis in musculoskeletal imaging.
