Transarterial chemoembolisation of the hepatocellular carcinoma in patients indicated to liver transplantationOriginal article
- IKEM, Praha
Aim: Presentation of our own experience with conventional chemoembolisation and chemoembolisation with drug eluting beads in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma before liver transplantation.
Method: 13 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in cirhotic liver were treated with transarterial chemoembolization in 2008 and 2009 prior to liver transplantation. There were 7 conventional chemoembolization procedures (lipiodol and doxorubicin) and 6 TACE with doxorubicin loading on drug eluting bead.
Results: On CT examination 4-6 weeks after procedure we found complete lipiodol uptake in the tumor in 5 patients, large tumor necrosis after DEB-TACE also in 5 patients. Eight patients were transplanted with mean period on waiting list 3.4 month. Five patients are without recurrence of tumor with good liver function. One patient died in the early posttransplantation period. Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma was found in 2 patients.
Conclusion: TACE is safe method of neoadjuvant therapy in patients with HCC prior to liver transplantation.
