Soft tissue tumors are large and heterogenous group of diseases requiring multimodality diagnostic approach. Magnetic resonance is, thanks to its high sensitivity and contrast resolution, the most effective method for their detection and local staging. Its possibilities in determining the histological type of tumor and in the decision whether the lesion is benign or malignant are quite limited. For this reason it MRI must be, with few exceptions, combined with histological examination, which is also necessary for complete staging. This article deals with MRI examination technique and the use of this method for staging and differential diagnosis. The possibilities of other imaging modalities are also briefly mentioned.
