Radionuclide imaging of central nervous systemReview article
- Oddělení nukleární medicíny LF UK a FN Hradec Králové
Aim: The article provides an overview of current radionuclide brain imaging modalities including scintigraphy, SPECT and PET. Review summarizes the key areas of their applications.
Method: SPECT brain perfusion imaging, SPECT presynaptic dopamine transporters assessment and PET metabolic brain imaging methods disclosing not only brain glucose metabolism (using 18F-FDG), but also DNA synthesis in high-grade gliomas (18F-FLT), tumour hypoxia (using 18FMISO) and β-amyloid neuritic plaques deposition in patients with m. Alzheimer are described as well as radionuclide cisternography.
Results: Aforementioned methods performed at our department are presented via enclosed scintigrams.
Conclusion: Radionuclide brain imaging methods plays an important role in managing patients with brain diseases, such as cerebrovascular disease, dementias, m. Parkinson, m. Alzheimer and brain tumours. Radionuclide brain imaging methods (particularly PET tumour imaging) enable us to provide diagnosis, prognosis and evaluate treatment response.
