Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the truth of the statement that the presence of calcifications in imaging methods is typical of adrenocortical carcinomas and to verify how often they are present in various types of expansions.
Methodology: This retrospective study conducted at the University Hospitals in Olomouc and Pilsen was conducted in 2003-2019 and includes patients with adrenal tumours who underwent adrenalectomy, followed by histological diagnosis of expansion. The final group included the following diagnoses: adenoma, pheochromocytoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, metastasis, and myelolipoma. The sample includes 268 patients (138 men and 130 women). We evaluated the age and sex of the patients and the presence of calcifications in individual diagnoses.
Results: Calcifications were least frequent in patients with metastases (only in 5% of cases); on the contrary, they were most common in myelolipomas (38%). In adrenocortical carcinomas they occurred only in 20% of the patients.
Conclusion: Calcifications are not a typical finding in adrenocortical carcinomas. They were significantly more frequent in myelolipomas than in other histological groups.
