Fetal MRI diagnostics of central nervous systemReview article

Ultrasonography (US) is the primary technique used for assessing the fetalbrain. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an alternative modality forevaluating the fetal brain and can image the brain in multiple planesregardless of the fetal lie. MRI is better in cases of adverse BMI (body massindex) of the mother and in the situation of oligohydramnion, when theacoustic conditions for ultrasound are limited. MRI has the advantage ofallowing better visualization and characterization of brain structures, has ahigher contrast resolution than ultrasound, and can detect anomalies notvisible in the US.
