MAGNIMS recommended modifications to the McDonald criteria 2010 for MRI in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosisReview article

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by the lesions of demyelination with their dissemination in time and in the anatomical space of CNS. Benefit of the lesions detection by magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis is important, and since 2001 magnetic resonance imaging is a part of the diagnostic criteria known as McDonald's MS criteria, as well as its further revisions in 2005 and 2010. The MAGNIMS (The European Magnetic Resonance Network in Multiple Sclerosis) reviewed in March 2015 the last modification of McDonald's criteria (2010), based on the new knowledges and own experiences of experts to propose their modifications. To confirm the criterion for dissemination in space, MAGNIMS propose to increase the number of new periventricular lesions from 1 to 3, as an additional CNS location to add the optic nerve investigations, and for the evaluation of dissemination in space and in time to include symptomatic spinal cord lesions, too. The authors of MAGNIMS recommend to use the modified McDonald criteria (2010) also for children with multiple sclerosis over 11 years. Criterion for dissemination in time in magnetic resonance imaging investigation is unchanged.
