Aim: The authors analysed numbers of endovascular neurointerventional procedures in Czech Republic neurovascular centres within years 2013-2016.
Methods: The questionnaire was sent to all tertiary and two secondary neurovascular centres in the Czech Republic. Numbers of each specified procedure were required. On the basis of 3 most frequently performed procedures (endovascular therapy of acute ischemic stroke, carotid stenosis, and intracranial aneurysms) the four-year trends of each procedure frequency and total numbers of all neurovascular procedures (i.e. carotid dissections, intracranial stenoses, cerebral and spinal arteriovenous shunts, skull base tumors, epistaxis, vasospasms after subarachnoid bleeding) were calculated.
Results: There was an abrupt increase in the number of treated patients of more than 400 in 2015. The annual increase in the number of all procedures was around 200 treated patients in the rest of the reported years. There was observed an increasing trend in the number of mechanical thrombectomies from 417 patients in 2013 to 1034 patients in 2016, which represents the approximate increase of 200 patients every year. Thus, the sudden increase in the total number of procedures in 2015 cannot be explained just by the increased number of endovascularly treated stroke patients. There was the mild increase in the number of carotid angioplasties, and a stagnation in the number of treated cerebral aneurysms. There were 7 centres out of 13 treated more than 50 patients with acute stroke, 6 centres out of 15 treated more than 40 patients for stenosis of the extracranial carotid artery, and 7 centres out of 12 treated more than 20 patients with the intracranial aneurysm in 2016.
Conclusion: The analysis of numbers of endovascular neurointerventional procedures in Czech Republic neurovascular centres within years 2013-2016 revealed increasing trend, however, there were found significant differences among cerebrovascular centres regarding numbers of treated patients.
